CHROMEBOOKS AT HOME

Chromebook Basics:
Your child uses a Chromebook at school, and now, at home too. You might have some questions. We want to help you understand what a Chromebook is and how it can be used at home.

Additional help for your Chromebook can be found here.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM

What you need to know:
  • Google Classroom is where student work is assigned and turned in
  • It is a free and secure platform built into all students' B-PC accounts
  • Students may have a Google Classroom space for each teacher they see
(Ex: Elementary students might only have one, while Junior High/High School might have 6 or more)
  • Find teacher contact information inside each Classroom space and email the teacher through the "People" tab at the top of the screen
  • Use the built-in Google Meet link to access each Classroom's Google Meet for livestream instruction when offered:

GOOGLE MEET

This is the video conferencing tool that will be used on a daily basis to stream live instruction from our buildings to remote learners at home. This platform may also be used for additional conferencing needs throughout the school year- for students, teachers, and parents alike.
Picture
Do's
  • use the same level of respect for yourself and others whether meeting in-person or remotely through Google Meet - the same rules of conduct for school apply even if you're learning at home
  • position yourself facing a light source and with a wall behind you
  • mute yourself unless you're speaking
  • use the feature to change your background when available to increase privacy
  • adhere to your teacher's guidelines at all times
  • turn off your video stream if your WiFi is cutting out
Don'ts
  • join Google Meet without appropriate attire or immediate surroundings
  • speak or allow background noise in your space while the teacher is speaking; it will interfere with everyone's audio
  • have unnecessary tabs open while streaming instruction; it will reduce your WiFi capacity
  • connect and use unneeded devices to your WiFi while streaming; it will reduce your WiFi capacity
  • record activity on your screen during Google Meets; these are secure and doing this violates the parent/student handbook
Additional help for Google Meet can be found here.

WiFi & B-PC HOTSPOTS

IF YOU QUALIFY FOR A HOTSPOT AND ARE HOME-ISOLATING DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, PLEASE NOTIFY YOUR SCHOOL OFFICE IF YOU NEED A HOTSPOT.
Internet access FAQs:
  • I have internet at home, but it's not good enough. Am I eligible for a hotspot?
Unfortunately, no. The district reserves this resource for those who do not have existing infrastructure in their home already.
  • Do I pay for the hotspot that's provided by the school?
No. This is a free resource for those in need. The hotspot will be collected at the end of the academic year or when a family withdraws from the school district. Damage to the device itself may result in financial liability.
  • I work from home. I'm concerned my residential WiFi won't handle the load of my work and my child's school work at the same time. Can I acquire a hotspot?
Though this arrangement can put a strain on WiFi bandwidth, the hotspots are reserved for those homes that do not have existing infrastructure. You might contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to see if they can increase your bandwidth. Some ISPs are flexible and will negotiate such upgrades.
  • If we do get a hotspot, what can connect to it?
Only B-PC-issued Chromebooks are configured to connect to these hotspots. No other devices are able to connect. When Chromebooks are in use at home, the school's filters and restrictions are still in place for web browsing, so access is limited to academic content.
